The Seewinkel at the northern end of Burgenland runs on the Pannonian fruit table that defines the region's pantry, Marillen and Zwetschken in summer, the wild Kriecherl plum that grows along the field edges, and apple orchards that feed the cider and Most tradition. Nachtgarten OG, a small-batch chili kitchen in Mönchhof run by Erich Vetter, has placed twice at the European Hot Sauce Awards 2026 (heatawards.eu), Europe's flagship hot sauce competition, with two sauces built directly on that fruit shelf: Silver in Sambal, Chutney and Pickles with Apfel-Chili Chutney, and Bronze in Sweet with Kriecherl-Chili Fruchtaufstrich.
Nachtgarten OG is run by Erich Vetter and a small team in Mönchhof in the Seewinkel, producing by hand in small batches from their own recipes. The two medalled sauces draw on regional fruit at both ends of the orchard year, the apple for the chutney and the Kriecherl, a small Pannonian wild plum, for the fruit spread. Two podiums in two different categories says the kitchen can build to a savoury condiment register and a sweet-preserve register from the same shelf of ingredients.
Nathan Austin on Kriecherl-Chili Fruchtaufstrich:
"The Kriecherl is the kind of regional ingredient most European hot sauce producers will never put in a bottle, a small Pannonian wild plum with a tart wine register that local kitchens reach for and that does not export. Building a chili fruit spread around it is the regional move the Sweet category was built to reward." – Nathan Austin, Tasting Editor, Republic of Heat
Apfel-Chili Chutney (Silver, Sambal, Chutney and Pickles): a chili chutney built on apple, designed to sit alongside cheese, cold cuts and roast meats in the way a Burgenland Most-table condiment would, with the chili tuned into the apple rather than over it.
Kriecherl-Chili Fruchtaufstrich (Bronze, Sweet): a chili fruit spread built on the Pannonian wild Kriecherl plum, a regional fruit rarely seen outside the region, with chili layered into the tart-sweet preserve register.
"We've put Mönchhof on the European chili map. A small kitchen, our own recipes, going up against producers from across the continent and coming out with a Silver and a Bronze. That's the result, and the team has earned it." – Erich Vetter, Nachtgarten OG
The European Hot Sauce Awards 2026 ran over 200 sauces from across the continent through blind tasting this year, scored on five criteria by a deliberately mixed panel of chefs, sommeliers, critics and chilli specialists. Sambal, Chutney and Pickles and Sweet are two different category briefs, one a savoury-side condiment, the other a sweet preserve, and Nachtgarten OG landed on the podium in both.
"A Silver and a Bronze in two different categories from a small Burgenland kitchen, both sauces built on regional fruit you do not see in many European hot sauce ranges. EHSA exists to surface exactly that kind of result." – Neil Numb, Founder, European Hot Sauce Awards

ABOUT THE EUROPEAN HOT SAUCE AWARDS The European Hot Sauce Awards (EHSA) is the professional competition for commercially produced hot sauces in Europe, run annually since 2024 from heatawards.eu. EHSA was born out of the Berlin Chili Festival, which has run since 2019 and returns 29–31 May 2026, and became an independent competition in 2024. Over 200 sauces from producers across the continent were entered in 2026. Entries are judged blind across five criteria: aroma, heat profile, flavour, creativity and finish. The 2026 edition covers 16 categories, with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals awarded across multiple positions in each. Each category also names a Best in Category, the top Gold. EHSA is run independently of any single producer or retailer.
